Very heartfelt book but needed more information on how to meditate
I found Darren Main's book perfect for individuals trying to develop a meditation practice. He provided excellent suggestions to help students start a consistent practice. He addressed the frustration that can build when developing a meditation practice. The chapter about "The Obstacles of Stillness" made the purchase of this book worth while. The whole book was filled with helpful guidance that made sense. The author has studied meditation for many years and had helpful stories from his own background and experiences that supported and encouraged a meditation student's growth. The author's positive presentation in this book made it possible to approach this exercise with a new appreciation for sitting down and meditating.
Very clear and sincere - I read this book as part of my Yoga Teacher training and loved it. I learnt a bit about meditation previously but this book was really good summarizing the techniques, how to establish an ongoing meditation practice. I can only recommend it.
I read this book during the Yoga Teacher Training with Darren and found it simple, useful, delightful. Just like Darren's other book, Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic, the book is easy to read and full of helpful and relatable personal examples (some of them not pretty, making it interesting). It's simple and yet very effective in getting one through how meditation works physically, what are the obstacles, and how to overcome them, and, most importantly, how to get started and stick with it. It certainly worked to get me back to sitting.
As a Yoga and Meditation teacher I always love to have books to suggest to those new to Yoga or meditation and this book is definitely one I do suggest. The author starts from the very beginning of the meditation practice.....how to sit, what times of day....how to create a daily practice....in my opinion the books biggest strength is that the author remembers what is was like to begin meditation and answers the questions a novice doesn't even know they need to ask. The language of the book is also a strength, the author is straight forward in describing meditation and its benefits. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to meditation or to any Yoga/meditation teachers looking for a resource to suggest.
This book changed my life. When I finished reading it I meditated for the first time. Now I meditate daily and I'm able to restart again and again, recognizing that there is a place of calm within me, even on the most stressful days. My favorite section is where Darren's describes techniques for labeling your thoughts as they arise. It really is a wonderful method to focus. Atha Yoga Anushasanam.
